From the moment your cargo is unloaded from the ship until it is allowed to leave and sit on the buyer's truck, it has to pass through several crucial stages.
If your cargo is clean and your documents are complete, these steps pass like a breeze, and you pocket a good profit. But if something is wrong or a document is missing, your cargo can get stuck in customs for weeks. 1. Step One: Ship Arrival and Paperwork (Customs System Registration)
As soon as the ship docks at the port and your container is placed on the customs ground, your buyer's representative in India (whose sole job is to clear the cargo) must get to work.
They take all the important documents you sent from your country to the buyer and register them in the Indian customs computer system. What do these documents include?
- Commercial Invoice: Which shows the price of the cargo.
- Packing List: Which states exactly how many almond cartons are in the container and their weight.
- Bill of Lading: Which acts like the ownership deed of the cargo and shows where it came from.
- Health Certificates: Which you obtained in your home country.

2. Step Two: The Strict Health Checkpoint! (Food Safety Authority)

Inspectors from the "Plant Quarantine" department check your container to make sure no strange pests, live insects, or plant diseases have entered Indian soil through your imported almonds.

Congratulations! Your buyer has paid all customs fees, and the health tests have been successfully completed. Now, the head of customs puts a big stamp called "Out of Charge" on the papers.
This means your container is completely free! Indian trucks drive under the container and take your valuable cargo out of the port towards the large market warehouses in Delhi or Mumbai. This is the exact moment your trade has successfully and smoothly concluded.
